The proposed 3Rs is a Resource Recovery and Renewable Energy Production Facility located on land to the west of Fryers Road in Walsall. The 3Rs facility is designed to thermally treat and recover energy around 436,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of residual waste under controlled conditions to generate electricity.

The main building is comprised of a series of volumetrically efficient interlocking and stepped ‘cubic’ forms. While these contain related but different process functions, they have been visually unified to create a singular architectural massing. To assist in breaking down the overall scale of the building their varying heights are expressed and allow the scale of the building to reduce towards the north and west. Further steps in the roof levels at high level fractures its upper profile against the skyline. The pattern and colour of the propose cladding further reduces the overall scale and the overall design approach offers a cohesive and striking design for the facility.
