The proposed Longridge ERC will be located in the southern part of the established Red Scar Industrial Estate, Longridge Road, in Preston. The facility would be capable of receiving around 395,000 tonnes per annum of non-hazardous residual waste and refuse- derived fuel. The LREC would use an established technology to process this material under controlled conditions to generate electricity and, if required, heat.
A refined ‘form follows function’ approach has been the underlying principle for the building design however from the outset it has been recognised that due to the scale of the ERF its design would have to be carefully considered. The proposed design offers a positive and confident architectural statement which celebrates its presence. To assist in reducing the overall visual scale the main building is horizontally layered, having a lower level ‘plinth’ which relates to the scale of the structures on the adjacent sites, and an upper level ‘linear’ form which in their materials and colour offer a striking architectural design.
