The completed EnviRecover Facility at Hartlebury Trading Estate assists Herefordshire and Worcestershire County Council in achieving its Local, National and European targets for the management of its Municipal Solid Waste. The facility treats around 200,000 tonnes of residual waste per annum, which would otherwise be sent to landfill, and generates around 15.5MW of electricity a year.
The architectural language adopted for the facility delivers a building whose external envelope is a ‘tight’ functional fit to the processes it contains and in so doing minimises its overall scale and massing. By expressing the steps in section and plan between different functional areas, and by employing a range of contrasting but complementary coloured cladding, the building’s apparent scale is further reduced and the projecting administration blocks and supporting columns create an inviting civic facade on its western elevation.
