The proposed Thameside ERF is situated within the industrial envelope of Tilbury Docks on a site near to the River Thames and the residential area of Grays in Essex.
Being a Phase 2 development its proposed design repeats that previously applied to the completed Phase I biomass facility to deliver a ‘family of buildings’ across the site. Therefore, the proposed design also adopts a strong formal ‘cubist’ approach for its overall massing and employs alternating light and dark grey bands of cladding to horizontally stratify the main ERF building to counter its verticality and to assist in breaking down its overall scale. By having these bands angled, rather than horizontal, further helps in visually fracturing its overall massing.
